Accohannock Indian Tribe at the Folk Musicians Retreat 2008
January 12, 2008
We contacted Chief Rudy today and I am happy to announce that, once again, the tribal historian of the Accohannock Indian Tribe will be visiting the Crisfield Folk Musicians Retreat to break bread with us and give folks at the event a chance to learn about Native American culture and history on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
I know Gunny Mike is waiting anxiously to see the Accohannock weapons display again!

Cool.
I really learned a lot about Indian culture from listening to that gentleman when he talked to us last August at the retreat. I have always been interested in human powered weapons, and he showed and told us about a lever actuated javelin/arrow device, that had killing power out to 300 yards (Hunting, not warfare). He also talked about historical relations between the tribes, and with the white settlers that were moving into the area. Exploded more than one cherished myth, too.
I was sitting there working my way through a pile of steamed crabs while listening to all this….it was the first time in my life I ever tried to pick crabs quietly! Give him my regards, and ask if we can have more Q & A after his talk, cuz I had a boatload of questions for him.
