Process over product

Andrew in the UK has been taking pictures to document one of his woodworking projects step-by-step.

It’s neat stuff from a woodworking angle – but the collected pictures also work well to illustrate how things are shaped through a process. If you are carving a block of wood into a duck or shaping the basic frailing banjo strum into a song we still have to go through a process – and that process is just as amazing as the completed work.

Thanks for showing this Patrick, now I will have to finish it ! I look forward to the painting at the end… maybe thats like playing your newly learned song to your family!

Hi Andrew – that is a super-looking duck all ready. Can’t wait to see it finished! (You must have an infinite amount of patience!)

Andrew.
your carvings are incredible, the way you bring these wonderful sculptures out of a solid block is magical. I now look at a block of wood or stone and try to imagine what could be waiting inside to be released by an artistic craftsman.

For a “first time” that’s an outstanding carving. As a comic book artist (another time killer hobby) I know what it means to be a process junky.

Andrew
She just needs a “sky dark glimmer” in her beady eye to believe she is about to launch herself from the water.
I think I understand what Patrick meant; the duck is beautiful, crafting her must be a valued experience, and watching her form in the hands of the creative impulse is a great joy as well.
