Maryland Skies
July 10, 2008
A couple of people have pointed out that a lot of my pictures end up featuring the skies over Crisfield. It’s not anything intentional. I don’t know anything about photography. I just wander around taking snapshots of anything that catches my eye, and in Crisfield there is always something wonderful going on over our heads.
Anyway, accidental or not, I thought it would be fun to gather a few of my favorite “skyscapes” (thanks to Andrew for the cool artistic term) in one collection.
I don’t have any illusions about being a photographer. I just get a kick out of sharing with folks how much I love this little corner of the Chesapeake Bay.

Jinny Git Around

After an absence, where I bought a cheap miniDV camera to record such things, here’s my rendition of Jinny Git Around, one of the songs in the Pete Seeger ‘How to play 5 string banjo’ book. I really need to dress better for these things though, maybe get my suit ironed – it’s a standard that the likes of Dock Boggs, Ralph Stanley, etc introduced and I feel we should keep it up.
Lunch Box Guitar

Hey Patrick (and Dear Old Dad),
I saw these over at the MAKE site (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/07/lunch_box_guitar.html?CMP=OTC-0D6B48984890) and I thought that they’d be right up your guys’ alley, even if a whole bunch of people have already let you know about them (which very well may be the case).
The enigmatic “these” are a couple of guitars and a banjo made out of, respectively, a lunch box and cigar box and a cookie tin. They look positively gorgeous!

While I’m at it, I want to let you know that I love the workshops and I’m always looking forward to your next guitar one (I don’t have a banjo at present). If you get time, could you do one on how to get that vamping skiffle feel that the Subway Shuffle has in other chord forms like B7 or C or G?
Thanks a ton and keep updating your site with great resources on how to make folk music!

No more boxes from Poppa
July 10, 2008
Bill from Poppas Boxes called today with the sad news that, after the current list of orders is filled, he would no longer be building instruments.
We wish Bill the very best in all of his future endeavours. I will be playing my cigar-box banjo for many years to come.
