Take A Whiff On Tyler

March 25, 2009

Tyler in Washington walks you through Take A Whiff On Me:

Take A Whiff On Me
words and music by Huddie Ledbetter

(note: the OCMS cover I was thinking of was “Cocaine blues” on Big Iron World … it has the same chorus…)

G (0000)
C (2012)
D7(0210)

Chorus:

Take a [G] whiff, take a whiff, take a whiff on me,
[C] Ev’rybody take a whiff on me,
[D7] Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on [G] me.

Verses:

[G] I got a woman six feet tall,
[C] Sleepin’ in the kitchen with her feet in the hall,
[D7] Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on [G] me.

Two old maids a-fishin’ in the creek,
They ain’t caught a man since a-way last week,
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

Want to get a woman let me tell you a word,
Grease your hair down as slick as lard, …
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

I’m a-walkin’ down the road with my hat in my hand,
lookin’ for a woman who needs a worried man,
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

walkin’ down the road, the road is mighty muddy,
Slippin’ and slidin’ and I can’t stand steady,
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

I know my woman ain’t a-treatin’ me right,
She don’t get home til the day gets light
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

Meet a lot of women out a-ramblin’ around,
But the Boston women are the best that I found,
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

Sing your song all night long,
Sing to my woman from midnight on,
Hey, hey, baby take a whiff on me.

A lot of you were puzzled when I said that Miss Trudy was making me a chocolate mayonnaise cake for my birthday.

Like sausage apple pie, chocolate mayonnaise cake is one of those things that my family has making for a long time. In fact, mom has made me a chocolate mayonnaise cake every year for my birthday since 1974.

Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake

I thought it would be fun to share it with all of you.

Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1  1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 2 1/4 teaspoon baking power
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cup  mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Sift dry ingredients into large bowl. Stir in mayonnaise, then water and vanilla.  Blend until smooth. Pour into pan (we use one pan, but some folks use two to make a two layer cake). Bake 350° for 30 minutes.

The recipe in mom’s box has a note that reads:

1937 – Mrs Paul Prince.

Carlos added his version of the recipe. he calls it chocolate banjonnaise cake.

The Somerset S-7 Banjo Ukulele has a wonderful, downright joyful, voice and it plays like a dream. I am thrilled with this instrument!

We are really busy this afternoon, but I know you want to see the S-7 so I stuck it on my violin stand and snapped a couple of quick pictures.

Happy Birthday Patrick!

Every so often I find something on the Internet that makes my day. I use a very addictive Mozilla Firefox add-on called Stumbleupon. You give them your interests and they will recommend websites you might like that you can “stumble” through. This morning I stumbled upon a heartwarming music video of people from all over the globe singing the Ben E. King classic “Stand By Me” together. I thought you would get a kick out of it. Not only for the cool New Orleans blues guys, but the fact the cool New Orleans blues guys are being backed up by a tambourine in France, a saxophone in Italy, a Ukulele in Brazil, a cello in Russia, native drums in New Mexico, and bass in South Africa (just to name a few). It really shows how music has no borders and can bring people together that live so far apart… Much like the ukulele project!

have a wonderful day, and here’s to many more chocolate mayonnaise birthday cakes!
