Thumb thumping and my intro lick.

YouTube is still messing up when I upload a file, so I am using WordPress for right now.

The couple responsible for the best banjo picture ever are celebrating their first anniversary at Janes Island this weekend.

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

Other times Patrick taught the “intro lick” for the daily frail on 10/22/08 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3dD4_QjNYE) and on 11/24/08 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpMT8DKm-G4) he did it basically the same as in this video, however I felt that there was something missing from it. The intro is actually just slightly different from what is tabbed out. The change is that instead of holding the open 3rd string whole note at the end, throw a hammer-on on the 4th string 3rd fret to cut the whole note, and follow it with an open G strum. He does this in the beginning of this video, go back and watch the phantom hammer here. Other ways to play it is hammer a full C chord instead of just that 3rd fret, or bend the 3rd string at the 2nd fret(maybe as an outro to a song), and again, follow either with an open G strum. What sounds confusing is that there’s really an extra measure being added to what’s tabbed out. Where the existing whole note gets cut up (with a hammer on or whatever) and then there is an open G strum at the end that rings for an extra 4 beat whole note. He starts talking while it rings out, so it flows from the banjo intro to the speaking intro. Hope this helps.

Alright Patrick, hows anout telling us all how you came up with the intro lick?

The picture on the face of the new bride is just lovely

I’ve noticed that you reference the “webbing between the thumb and forefinger” regularly. I learned the other day that the name for that is the ‘purlicue’ and thought you’d appreciate that knowledge as well! :)

  4. Cedric Down Under Says:

Pretty good going, Tim. In effect, you are spot on. Actually, a purlicue is the space, or distance, between the extended thumb and the extended forefinger (that is, index finger.) It was used as an old marbles playing measure, along with the spang, which is the width of a belt buckle. The actual web between the index finger and the thumb that our two banjo professors, Pat and Patrick, refer to, apart from skin and fat and so forth, is mainly the transverse part of the adductor policis muscle – the muscle that pulls the thumb back towards the palm and knuckles.
Thanks to you, I now look forward to hearing our professors say, “Just decrease or increase your purlicue.”

    Hi Pat and Patrick,

I loved the daily frail. Thank you for fixing the link problem I was having earlier. The link to the mp3 plays perfectly. I can now see the links or I should say rather my screen reader can. I’m going to try that intro. Thanks once again for sharing such valuable knowledge. Best wishes for a speedy recovery from your baha implant surgery.

    Musically,
    Marissa
