Help Pick A Winner

Al from the Painless Technology blog had his high school web design classes make banners in response to my request for help pimping up our YouTube channel.
The kids made thirty wonderful banners, and Al asked me to pick four of them as winners. I thought it would be fun to have you guys help me choose the winners. Post the numbers of your four favorite banners in the comments.

It’s a toss up between #11 & #12 for me, but all are really creative! Great Job! What a fantastic idea!

I like 2 best, though they all show good taste and workmanship. When I think about it though, plain seems best.

such creativity! 9 would be absolutely perfect if it showed a banjo instead of the fiddle. 2 is my next pick.

This was difficult. I rated them based on banner and logo. I also included my critiques in case it would help the students.
Here are my top 4 picks in order.
#1–7 I like the organic feel of the banner. The glow behind the word-mark helps to distinguish it from the background. The bright colors on the right side of the banner cause the composition to feel off balance. Placing the word-mark further to the left may have helped with this.
#2–11 I like the clean design on this banner. Placing the text on the left was an interesting choice. The drop shadow on the text is unnecessary and doesn’t fit with the clean lines on the rest of the banner. The logo doesn’t read well at all. Using a lighter gradient and eliminating the drop shadow would help.
#3–12 I wanted to place this one higher on the list. The use of photos really capture the feel of the website. In design, elements should either lead or follow. In this case the pictures obviously lead. The text is overworked. They are not letting the pictures lead. The logo doesn’t read well. The black text with the black glow nearly disappears.
#4–23 There is something to be said for simplicity. Both the banner and logo read well, however, this doesn’t feel as polished as the others on my list. The still frame from the video has compression artifacts which are distracting. There may have been some treatment in a photo editing package that may have helped., but you would have been better off searching the site for better source material. If I am counting correctly, there are 4 fonts being used in this banner. That is too many. When you use too many fonts in a design it begins to look like a ransom note. Pick at most 2.

Folks,
Number 11 & 5 are my choices. Thematically they say it all; and the viewer get a folksy invitation in visual symbolism to ‘drop by and enjoy for awhile.’
