Hey Patrick and DoD.    Thanks so much for this tune,  I will always be playing this one it’s almost a self lullaby!    Thought I’d quickly turn the camera on to record it before heading to bed but the squeaks and clattering in the background from around midway is my girlfiend locking up.  Can’t believe I look so serious since I was trying to not laugh!  ))

Gum and Butts

Hi Pats,
It’s a miserable, dark and rainy day here in London.  Darker still in the Kings of Perfection hideout in the foothills of Brockley. Even darker  in these stupid masks. Still, when you’re on the run from the Good Taste Police, you’ve got to do something. You know, I don’t even think they are very hygienic. I think this tune illustrates our predicament.

Silver Dollar (1904?)

February 18, 2010

Hi Patrick,

Thought I’d share some music history that I had stumbled upon.

A friend mailed to me a great little pocket book full of old ballads and folk songs. I started learning one of the songs, “Silver Dollar” because it had a neat chord progression with a lot of 7ths and that dreaded F-chord. I think it was written in 1904 or so, the book says copyright in 1939. By the time I got it down, I realized it was pretty rife with misogyny – maybe an artifact of the times. I’m finding I usually have to learn a song before I really pick up on the meanings. Still, I laid down a quick recording for posterity. But after some search on YouTube, I realized that chords aren’t enough to carry a song – I totally messed up the melody.

Here’s my version (the book only had one verse):

And here’s a 1955 cover (the cleanest I could find):

Oh, you can [F]take a silver dollar and drop it on the [D7]ground
and it’ll [G7]roll because it’s round.
A [C7]woman never knows what a good man she’s got
un[F]til she turns him down,
My honey, listen, you better listen to [D7]me
I [G7]want you to understand.
As a [Bb]silver dollar goes from [F]hand to [D7]hand,
so a [G7]woman goes from [C7]man to [F]man.

Lookin’ forward to the new book!

White House Blues

Hi Patrick,

I’m passing along a clip of me playing the “White House Blues”. This was a song I never knew before I started frailing and watching your “you tube” videos. It’s one of those songs that people seem really enjoy the lyrics (which is good because I haven’t mastered the melody yet).

I was supposed to post this yesterday, but this video had me so traumatized I lost track of time . . .
