Hi Patrick,
I thought I would follow up and share the second half of my contribution to that RPMChallenge. I’m now going back and trying to actually learn the songs that were haphazardly written during February. A song just ain’t worth learnin’ if you can’t play it live, so here’s a video of my favorite from the set…
Turnpike II (Eastbound)
Lyrics:
this [D]morning i looked off the side of the road
the [D]drive-in theater was [D7]covered in snow
the [C]sun light sparkled like [G]diamonds
and on we [D]go
those [D]concession stand that served chips and beer
'gainst a [D]chilly blue sky [D7]no one's been here
for some [C]time least half a [G]year
and on we [D]go
they'd [A]play those late night double [G]features
and on we [D]go
repeat intro
[D]flatland gives way to [D]highland
[D]blue sky gives way to [D7]fog
the [C]sun in our eyes dissa[G]ppears
and on we [D]go
[D]headin' down eastbound o[D]hio turnpike
i [D]catch myself grippin' my [D7]steering wheel tight
and the [C]easy-pass slides off my [G]dash
on we [D]go
drive [A]10 miles per hour through a [G]row of toll booths
and we [D]go

Steve this is fantastic!! – I downloaded your album late last night and listened to it a couple of times on the way to work this morning. On the way home the ipod was on shuffle and this song played between something by Bon Iver and something else by Horsefeathers and it just sounded great! – The album cover is perfect, banjo sounds terrific and how can u go wrong with a jews harp/whistling solo!! – Well Done mate – Andy

Thanks for the kind words guys! This challenge was a lot of fun, but I’m pretty sure I stole most of my ideas, chords, and melodies from assorted folk/country songs that have rattled in my head over the last few years. I’m looking forward to spending more time learning more songs to steal from this year. Spent a good part of last night frailing Wayfaring Stranger…
I took the photos for the “album packaging” with my cell phone and just blurred it up a bit in photoshop. It was actually taken a couple miles away from where I saw the drive-in theater that I wrote about in this video. As gloomy as it may seem, I’m actually much more upbeat this year; I think I’m getting used to the long Winters and able to see some of the bright spots in them.
